What Does a Paper Shredding Service Really Do?

You would think you know what a paper shredding service is, just from the name. But there is more to it for most such companies than you would guess. Let's start with the basics. Any paper shredding service is of course going to shred paper. But how and where?

One company may specialize in doing it at their customers' places of business, just outside the building in their own custom truck designed to do the job while the customer can watch. Another one might collect the sensitive documents from their customers and securely travel with these documents to their own shredding facility. They could even have a closed circuit camera for the customer to see the job being done. They would likely provide the customer with a certification document stating what had been done. Many paper shredding services offer both ways of working.

Beyond, that, many a paper shredding company also handles hard disk disposal and disposal of CDs, DVDs, and similar items that might carry data that must not be leaked.

Many of these companies, probably most of them, work with recyclers to keep the very finely shredded bits of paper or other materials from going to landfills. So they create a real environmental benefit.

The paperwork that such a company has to deal with is tremendous. We are not now speaking of what they destroy, but of what goes on in their own offices. You see, paper shredding as a business has come about as government and society have become much more concerned about identity theft and about disposal of any papers that might compromise someone's privacy. There are federal laws, state laws, and there may even be local laws in your area.

A paper shredding service can save you from having to be totally familiar with every last detail of every last law, so that is actually a significant part of its work. It can save you stress and worry. So not only do such companies handle the actual physical labor, they handle a lot of paperwork too. That's better for you to concentrate on your own business. Chances are you have challenges enough right there!
