If you work for a large and complex business with multiple locations, be sure to consider the options of working with a large paper shredding service which is also multi-locational. They stay up to date on the laws, they work with all your locations, and it is much easier for you. You will most likely be able to choose between on-site shredding, where a mobile shredding unit comes to your door, and offsite shredding, where your documents--very securely handled, of course--are taken to the location of the service you have selected. If you go the latter route, you want to get Certificates of Destruction as proof of the shredding.

For small and medium-sized businesses, paper shredding companies offer a lot of options. You can have intermittent pickups as you need them, and some firms provide you with secure containers to put your documents in until destruction time. Or you can consider purchasing one or more shredders, after thinking through whether you have the space and security to do it on your own.
